A letter from Joe Hughes

Hi, I’m Joe.
I like these tools. But the trouble I look for isn’t a machine breaking. It’s a machine working perfectly while someone relies on the answer without checking, or while words shared in confidence end up somewhere nobody meant them to go.
I’m a safety engineer from the nuclear Navy, where things have to work every single time because of what happens when they don’t. It taught me a habit I love. On a ship, the deckplates are the deck itself: the floor under the people doing the work. The best engineers spend their time down there. They look at the equipment as it is actually used, not as the manual says, and they write down what they find. Not to point fingers. So everyone depending on it can sleep at night.
That’s where the name comes from, and it’s the whole idea. Deckplate brings that habit to the AI tools inside ordinary organizations: the law office down the street, the small company trusted with government data, the places with no AI department and no spare afternoon. I look at what the tools really do with what people put into them. I write it down in plain English. And I hand it to the people who need it.
So here is my mission, as simply as I can say it: when people trust you with something that matters, they deserve to know someone checked. I’d love to be that someone.
What I promise
Plain English, always.
No jargon and no acronyms to look up. If a sentence needs a footnote, I rewrite it.
Nothing else to sell.
No AI products and no referral fees from vendors. The only thing Deckplate sells is the review.
Never a lecture.
I won’t tell you to stop using AI. The point is to keep going, and to be able to show your work.
Curious, nervous, or just want to talk it through? Write to me.
Joe Hughes
